Kara Walker was born in California in 1969 and now lives in New York. She first became known through her adaptation of the 18th-19th Century art of silhouetting, which she uses to make stylised images which confront issues of racism, slavery, lust and domination. She has exhibited at London's Hayward Gallery, and in France, Germany and at many museums across the USA.
