Introduction to Artes Mundi

Artes Mundi is a major international biennial event in the visual arts, celebrating contemporary artists from across the world.

Meaning “Arts of the World” in Latin, Artes Mundi comprises a major exhibition at the National Museum and Gallery of Wales, Cardiff (11 February to 7 May 2006), a lively public event and education programme, an award of £40,000 to an artist and a purchase fund to enable several works by some of the shortlisted artists to be purchased for the National Museums of Wales’ Collections. Artes Mundi is a key event in attracting visitors to Cardiff and is representative of the cultural contribution of Wales to the world. read more

The Selection Process

The shortlist of artists is selected by two internationally-recognised curators, in discussion with the Artistic Director.

The Selectors for 2006 are:

Deepak Ananth: originally from India, now based in Paris as independent curator and lecturer in Art History at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Caen, France.

Ivo Mesquita: Curator for Projeto Octógono, Pinacoteca do Estado, São Paulo, Brazil, and Visiting Professor, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York, USA.

Artes Mundi had invited those working in the contemporary visual arts to nominate artists to be considered by the selectors. In 2005, more than 200 nominations were received from 59 countries worldwide. Using this information, and from their own research, Deepak and Ivo drew up the shortlist. In making their decisions, the selectors are asked to focus on two main criteria:

artists who have achieved recognition for the quality of their work in their own country or sphere and are emerging internationally,

and artists who explore ideas of the human form / human condition and add to our understanding of humanity.

It is intended that this last description should be taken as broadly as possible, and executed in a diverse range of media. Eligibility also includes artists of any age who are resident or working anywhere in the world.
