Click here to read more about the artists on the Artes Mundi website Selected by Deepak Ananth and Ivo Mesquita, all the artists have achieved recognition for the quality of their work, which reflects in some way the human form or the human condition and adds to our understanding of humanity. Artes Mundi includes a major exhibition at the National Museum Cardiff, a public event and education programme, a partnership with the BBC to produce several documentaries examining the role of the artist in society, a publication and a conference. A fund of £30,000 will enable works by some of the shortlisted artists to be purchased for the National Collections of Wales and one artist will become the recipient of the £40,000 Artes Mundi Prize. It includes large paintings, humorous drawings, compelling photographic images, as well as fictional films of human drama or documentary discussion. Each artist comments on society in a different way, with different materials. Artes Mundi celebrates some of the world’s most significant artists working today, and their perspectives on real and imagined worlds and cultures. The Artes Mundi International Conference will take place over two days at the National Museum Cardiff and Swansea Institute. A key aim of the conference is to bring together artists, curators and critics, to discuss how visual artists place themselves and their work in the world today and to consider ideas on presenting contemporary visual arts or creating platforms in places not perceived to be at the ‘centre’. Contributions will be made by some of the shortlisted artists as well as internationally renowned curators, art critics, art historians and cultural commentators, who will consider a number of questions, including:
The conference will be Chaired by Declan McGonagle and speakers include: Deepak Ananth, Thelma Golden and Ivo Mesquita. To register for a place at the Artes Mundi Conference 2006 please fill in the booking form and send it with a cheque for full payment of your fee to Artes Mundi at the address above, no later than 3 March 2006. Please note that places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served, basis Fees for the two-day Conference are: £70 and £35 Concessions (full–time students, seniors & unwaged). These costs include travel between Cardiff and Swansea; an evening reception at the Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea; lunches, teas and coffees, and VAT. We are committed to making contemporary art accessible to a wide range of audiences, stimulating public interest in and broadening understanding of contemporary visual art. Visitors are invited to use the resources which include publications and internet access for research, leave a written comment about the exhibition or simply relax. It is open to everyone and no booking is necessary. Artes Mundi also runs a number of innovative outreach programmes taking contemporary visual art and culture out of the Museum into the wider community.
