Artes Mundi 11 Jury Announced
We are delighted to announce the Artes Mundi 11 selector/jurors comprising major figures within contemporary visual arts: Zoe Butt, Sohrab Mohebbi and Marie Helene Pereira. Their collective knowledge, expertise and networks are far reaching, conceptually, practically and geographically, creating a diversity and depth in support of Artes Mundi 11. Zoe Butt is a curator and writer, nurturing critical thinking and historically conscious artistic communities, fostering dialogue among cultures of the globalising souths.
In 2022 she founded ‘in-tangible institute’, seeking a robust ecology for locally-responsive curatorial talent in Southeast Asia and is currently Lead Advisor (Southeast Asia and Oceania), Kadist Art Foundation. Previously she was Artistic Director, Factory Contemporary Arts Centre, Ho Chi Minh City (2017-2021), Executive Director, Sàn Art, Ho Chi Minh City (2009–2016); Director, International Programs, Long March Project, Beijing (2007–2009); Assistant Curator, Contemporary Asian Art, Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane (2001–2007). Notable endeavours include Pollination (2018-); Sharjah Biennial 14: Leaving the Echo Chamber – Journey Beyond the Arrow, (2019); Conscious Realities (2013-2016) and San Art Laboratory (2012-2015).
Sohrab Mohebbi is Director of SculptureCenter.
Previously he served as the Kathe and Jim Patrinos Curator of the 58th Carnegie International. Mohebbi was SculptureCenter’s Curator-at-Large (2020-21), and Curator between 2018 and 2020. He was Assistant Curator at REDCAT, Los Angeles, 2014-18. He received an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and a BFA in photography from Tehran Art University.
Marie Helene Pereira is a Curator and cultural practitioner from Dakar, Senegal. She is Senior Curator (Performative practices) at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, Germany.
Pereira is a member of RAW Material Company since its inception in 2011, and its previous Director of Programs (2019-2022). She has organized exhibitions and related discursive programs including the participation of RAW to “We face forward: Art from West Africa Today” Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester; ICI Curatorial Hub at TEMP, New York; The 9th Shanghai Biennial, Shanghai (2013). She co-curated Scattered Seeds in Cali-Colombia (2015-2017) and curated Battling to normalize freedom at Clarkhouse Initiative in Mumbai, India (2017).
Pereira was co-curator of a section of the 13th edition of Dakar Biennale of contemporary African Art (2018), part of the artistic team of Still Present! – the 12th Berlin Biennale (2022), a recipient of the ICI Curatorial Research Fellowship (2021) – a Marian Goodman Gallery initiative conceived by artist Steve McQueen – in honor of the late Okwui Enwezor.
Pereira is profoundly interested in the politics of identity as well as histories of migration. She lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
